The Self-Esteem and Beanie Baby 'Bubbles' | Psychology Today

As the parent of a Millennial and someone who writes about them, I think about the two ?bubbles??one lasting longer than the other with more profound consequences?that animated the lives of parents and children in the 1990s and beyond:? Self-esteem and Beanie Babies. Let me explain the connection. ??

During my daughter?s early years of education, self-esteem and its possible loss were omnipresent.? The ambergris of the time, self-esteem was both prized and fragile, the magic elixir that would keep your child safe from drug use and other dangers, make him or her perform better in school, enjoy enhanced popularity and friendship, and be genuinely happy for life.

Guarding self-esteem motivated heated discussions and as well as many misguided efforts: team sports in which every player got a trophy; teachers writing comments on schoolwork in pencil because ink seemed too ?permanent? and, in some places, banning red pens as being too hurtful and harsh; and ladling out praise for everything and nothing.

Criticism, even the constructive kind, was thought to be too damaging. As Dr. Arthur Levine, who has studied the Millennials and written a book about them, noted in an interview: ?This is a generation that was not allowed to skin their knees. They got awards and applause for everything they did, even if it was being the most improved, or the best trombone player born on April 5.??

Another parent of a Millennial recalls that ?the whole ?I?m special? movement was very influential in my child?s preschool. They all had a chance, for instance, to be ?person of the day.?? Traditional science and history fairs?that is, competitions?were under attack by parents who felt that ?not winning? (a softer way of describing losing which fit right into the zeitgeist) might damage their kids? self-esteem. In one town, a compromise was reached to deal with the fragility of kindergarteners? self-esteem:? a first and a second prize were awarded, with the rest of the grade ?tied? for third place. Put on paper, it all seems pretty preposterous, but that?s how it played out.

Parents didn?t invent the self-esteem construct, of course; it trickled down out of psychological studies and, as it did, it grew into a virtual flood of articles, news reports, and books (including one I wrote). Parents bought into it because it was the prevailing wisdom of the time and who knew what would happen to your hapless kid if you weren?t ever watchful?

If Millennials today suffer from FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), their parents certainly worried about FAILURE?their kids? and their own?in big caps, all of it tied to loss of self-esteem. I remember one mother who dyed her seven-year-old?s hair ?to help her self-esteem? and the eight-year-old who came to school fully made up so ?she?d feel better about herself and more confident.? There were the parents who sent their nine-year-old son to a life coach to help build up his apparently fragile sense of self.

Enter the Beanie Baby onto the self-esteem scene. If you were a little girl, the Beanie Baby quickly became your heart?s desire, although many Millennial boys collected them too. For those of you who somehow missed the craze, Beanies were (and still are) soft and cuddly $5 plush animals which came with a tag that stated their names and ?story,? like Freckles the Leopard and Allie the Alligator.? More important ?even though many, many millions were manufactured? they were only sold through specialty gift and toy stores which only received a limited number so they were hard to come by.? And they were ?retired? from manufacturing so an enormous secondary and collector?s market sprung up, along with magazines and books devoted to them. Gobs of money were made (and spent). Beanie Baby hunting?finding the elusive new one and being the first to have it?became an activity. (Admission: I was one of those parents. I was on waitlists at stores in Manhattan and New Jersey and, no, I don?t wish to calculate the exact amount I spent on them.)??

The stage was thus set for Beanie Babies to be conflated with self-esteem?a perfect Millennial storm. I remember one mother, an executive in Manhattan who worked full time and had a nanny, paid $250 for the purple ?Princess? bear. She was a commemorative for the late Princess Diana and impossible to come by, and, yes, her kid was the first in the school to have it. A big self-esteem score there and a competitive sport that the Baby Boomers and their Millennial offspring could get into. (Admission: I acquired two Princess bears at $5 each some time later; my daughter sold one for something like $100 and was able to acquire the Garcia tie-dye bear she desperately wanted at a Beanie Baby convention. I?m not qualified to speculate on how that affected her self-esteem.)

And, then, it was over. The Beanie Baby bubble burst along with the dot.coms, production ceased in 1999, and that was that, and I, along with millions of other Americans, had too many of these things hanging around, collecting dust. As it happens, the self-esteem bubble was about to be pricked too, but it took a bit longer and, somehow, the message didn?t trickle down to masses?that is, parents and teachers? for longer than that. A 2003 report by Roy F. Baumeister, Jennifer D. Campbell, Joachim I. Krueger, and Kathleen D. Vohs titled ?Does High-Esteem Cause Better Performance, Interpersonal Success, Happiness, or Healthier Lifestyles?? made it clear that the ?you?re so special? approach was, to be blunt, not a very good one. For efficiency, I?ll quote from the summary offered by the authors:

• The modest correlations between self-esteem and school performance do not indicate that high self-esteem leads to good performance.? Instead, high self-esteem is partly the result of good school performance.
• Self-esteem has not been shown to predict the quality or duration of relationships.
• High self-esteem makes people more willing to speak up in groups and to?criticize the group?s approach?. Relative to those with low self-esteem, those with high self-esteem show greater in-group favoritism, which may increase prejudice and discrimination.
• High self-esteem does not prevent children from smoking, drinking, taking drugs?or engaging in early sex.
• Overall, the benefits of self-esteem fall into two categories: enhanced initiative?and pleasant feeling.

And then there is the ?ouch? statement: ?In view of the heterogeneity of high self-esteem, indiscriminate praise might just as easily promote narcissism, with its undesirable consequences.?

Gee, you think? So while high self-esteem does make you feel happier, it also may give you an inflated sense of your own abilities and self-importance. As it happens, Millennials didn?t need that boost since what?s called the ?above average effect??the bias in thinking that causes people to overestimate their strengths and underestimate their weaknesses?was already alive and well, thank you very much.?

So, other than inflicting them with FOMO, how the did the self-esteem tsunami affect the Millennials? Well, I?m not inclined to believe that the need for ego boosts is addicting as?Brad J. Bushman, Scott J, Moeller, and Jennifer Crocker suggest in their study titled ?Sweets, Sex or Self-Esteem,? nonetheless the finding that college kids prefer boosts to their esteem to sex, food, and even booze is pretty amazing, on the one hand, and not surprising on the other.

So please pause before you praise your child just for being. Have it connected to something he or she has done. As for the Millennials, I suspect that life experience will, inevitably, introduce them to some criticism, perhaps even written in red ink, which may help temper that ?I?m so special? view of themselves their parents foisted on them. Life, alas, isn?t conducted on a pass/fail basis.

Dec. 9, 2012 ? Wellcome Trust researchers have discovered how the brain assesses confidence in its decisions. The findings explain why some people have better insight into their choices than others.

Throughout life, we're constantly evaluating our options and making decisions based on the information we have available. How confident we are in those decisions has clear consequences. For example, investment bankers have to be confident that they're making the right choice when deciding where to put their clients' money.

Researchers at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at UCL led by Professor Ray Dolan have pinpointed the specific areas of the brain that interact to compute both the value of the choices we have in front of us and our confidence in those choices, giving us the ability to know what we want.

The team used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure activity in the brains of twenty hungry volunteers while they made choices between food items that they would later eat. To determine the subjective value of the snack options, the participants were asked to indicate how much they would be willing to pay for each snack. Then after making their choice, they were asked to report how confident they were that they had made the right decision and selected the best snack.

It has previously been shown that a region at the front of the brain, the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, is important for working out the value of decision options. The new findings reveal that the level of activity in this area is also linked to the level of confidence participants placed on choosing the best option. The study also shows that the interaction between this area of the brain and an adjacent area reflects participants' ability to access and report their level of confidence in their choices.

Dr Steve Fleming, a Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellow now based at New York University, explains: "We found that people's confidence varied from decision to decision. While we knew where to look for signals of value computation, it was very interesting to also observe neural signals of confidence in the same brain region."

Dr Benedetto De Martino, a Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellow at UCL, added: "Overall, we think our results provide an initial account both of how people make choices, and also their insight into the decision process."

In addition to promoting awareness of the disease, the Barbara Ireland Walk hopes to raise $100,000 to fund research. Currently, the Clinical Research Program at Cancer Center of Santa Barbara is recruiting patients for 10 breast cancer trials and continues to collect data in more than 30 trials. The program screens all breast cancer patients in Santa Barbara for clinical eligibility and to date has enrolled more than 200 patients in our community.

Starting at the beginning of July I got really depressed about my weight (which was 285 lbs) after one of my clinical instructors kept making comments about how pretty one of the nurses was. It made me sad to think that I was never one of the ?cute ones? because I had let my weight balloon out of control at an early age. I would eat anytime I experienced any kind of emotion. I would eat when I was sad, angry, happy, nervous, etc.. I decided that day I would lose the weight that so many diets over the years had failed to achieve. The first week was easy?the depression allowed me to feel no hunger so I ate nothing and lost 15 lbs. The second week I was feeling good about losing weight but my hunger returned?I allowed myself to eat pickles (5 cals each) and a spoonful of cottage cheese a couple times a day. The second week I lost 10 lbs. The 3rd and 4th week were the hardest because I was no longer satisfied with only losing 10 lbs. a week?I wanted my weight to fall off faster but pickles were no longer satisfying so my calorie intake increased to about 500 cals/day resulting in only a 10 lb weight loss for those 2 weeks. The 5th week of my diet I returned to school from summer break and started receiving compliments from my classmates and my teachers. I told everyone it was exercise and a diet plan that was to credit my weight loss. Every day I was being complimented and it felt so good that it made me more determined to lose more weight. I no longer had to force myself not to eat because the thought of food had started to make me nauseous whenever I looked at how many calories everything had. Within a week of returning to school my diet had changed to no more than 200 cals/day with some days being under 50 calories. I was losing between 7-10 lbs a week for about 6 weeks but then I hit a plateau and my weight loss changed to about 4-5 lbs a week. At this point my cutting got worse. I?ve been an occasional cutter since Jr High but usually would cut for a couple days if I was really depressed about something and then I wouldn?t cut again until I really needed to. This time (for about 2 months) I let cutting get out of control. I was cutting everyday and some days more than once. I was going to my car during lunch to cut, I was cutting in the shower, I was cutting before school and when I got home. Cutting was all I was looking forward to and I know that sounds disgusting but for me cutting made me feel real. I could think clearer and everything made sense. I stopped cutting though when it was almost time for clinicals again because we?re required to wear short sleeves during some of our rotations and also for graduation which was only a month and a half away. Cutting was easier to quit than I thought it would be?I just restricted my calories even more and on some days the power I felt from cutting I got from not eating. I went several days without eating anything at all and then landed myself in the hospital with chest pain. After a few tests and an IV I was discharged with orders to stay better hydrated (they had no clue I wasn?t eating). I decided to talk to someone about what I was going through for any suggestions about what I could do to help me not be so scared of calories. I talked to one of my instructors at school (who kept complimenting me for exercising and losing weight) and told her I was losing weight not because I was exercising but because I wasn?t able to eat. We talked for a while and then hung up. She called me back a few minutes later and said she had gotten some referrals for me that would be helpful and she encouraged me to stop by her office and pick up the list. When I picked up the list from my instructor I looked over the list but had no intentions of calling an eating disorder specialist. I decided to talk about this issue with my counselor instead. When I told my counselor what was going on she also referred me to an eating disorder specialist because she felt with their specialized training on this subject that they would be able to help me better than she could. My counselor provided me with a list of referrals as well. After struggling for another 2 weeks with food issues (food was fast becoming my enemy and I could hardly look at it anymore) I decided to call a psychologist from the list. I met with her the first time and she explained fees, session cancellations, policies, etc. The second session we talked about how diets don?t work and she suggested reading some chapters from a book called ?diets don?t work?. The 3rd session we talked about setting up a menu for me to follow that was approx 1200 cals/day. I told her that I wasn?t ready to make the promise to follow a plan with that many calories and so she suggested I keep doing what I?m doing until I reach my target weight and then I?ll either become ready on my own to follow a healthy eating plan or I?ll end up in the hospital again. Deere says 1Q profit up 4 percent on strong sales (AP)

Deere & Co. posted a 4 percent jump in its quarterly profits thanks to strong equipment sales, but some expected better and potential headwinds from currency exchange rates overshadowed even a healthier outlook.

The results topped Wall Street expectations, but Deere's 11 percent sales growth fell short of the 16 percent to 18 percent growth the company had predicted for the quarter. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected earnings per share of $1.23 on revenue of $6.56 billion, on average.

Deere's stock slid nearly 4 percent, or $3.18, to $85.87 in afternoon trading.

Deere, based in Moline, Ill., says it still expects equipment sales to be up about 15 percent in fiscal 2012, but the company now predicts net income of $3.275 billion, up from last fall's forecast of $3.2 billion in net income.

It was a solid quarter, Credit Suisse analyst Jamie Cook said, but the outlook for the year was only modestly improved. She said there will be questions about why Deere was so conservative.

Executives said their outlook for the year would have been higher, but the company now expects exchange rates will cost the company about $100 million this year. Without those costs, sales growth would have reached about 19 percent, Deere said.

CEO Samuel Allen the Deere is investing in numerous new products and seven new factories throughout the world in preparation for stronger demand as the economy improves and developing countries improve infrastructure.

Key markets are "in the early stages of recovery," Allen said.

Edward Jones analyst Jeff Windau the quarter looked good initially, but investors may have been bothered by the lower-than-predicted sales figure and headwinds related to research and development, as well as foreign exchange rates.

"I think there was a good headline number with the earnings beat," Windau said. "I think as people started to dig in a little deeper, there's just a few items that raise questions."

Deere forecast that U.S. farm income will decline to $103.9 billion this year from last year's $115.7 billion, and Windau said that might make some investors nervous because a drop in farm income usually hurts tractor sales.

Deere predicted 10 percent growth industrywide for agricultural equipment sales in Canada and the U.S., but it tempered its forecast for some other regions. Deere predicts ag sales in Asia will increase only moderately this year because tractor sales in India will likely be flat. Agricultural sales in South America may also be flat or even down 5 percent because of drought. Deere officials predict their sales will exceed those industrywide predictions.

Research and development costs will likely grow about 12 percent in 2012, Deere said, as it rolls out more new models to comply with tighter emissions standards. That's slightly higher than the 10 percent growth in costs that Deere had earlier predicted.

During the first quarter, Deere said equipment sales grew 11 percent. Sales outside the United States and Canada led the way with a 21 percent increase while sales in those two countries grew only 5 percent.

Deere said it was also helped by strong 22 percent sales growth in its construction and forestry division. That unit contributed $1.4 billion to Deere's sales in the quarter, up from $1.1 billion a year ago.

Quarterly sales of the company's agriculture and turf equipment grew 8 percent to $4.7 billion from last year's $4.4 billion. Deere expects sales percentage growth of 15 percent in the sector for the year, with farmers in major markets seeing strong demand.
